Shimanami By E-bike

The Shimanami Kaido does everything it can to make it possible for even relative beginners to complete the over 70km ride in one day, but 70km is 70km and it can be a challenge for many.

While we recommend that beginners consider taking two (or even three) days to complete the route, so that they can focus on enjoying the views rather than focusing on the clock, not everyone has the time to spare.

Enter the Sports E-bike…

Shimanami Japan is expanding its fleet of long range sports E-bikes to give beginner cyclists a boost to help them not only cover the whole of the route within a day, but to give them the time to stop to take in the views, see the sights and chill in the occasional cafe along the way. E-bikes also close the gap between experienced cyclists and novices, and allow people of differing abilities and ages to enjoy the ride together.

Although they are more expensive to rent than our standard rental cycles, we think that the extra enjoyment that you get out of your trip is worth the extra cost.

Two classic Shimanami Kaido side trips to consider with E-bikes

Ushio Chocolatl, Mukaishima

This cool Shimanami Chocolate factory, cafe and shop in an upcycled office building on Mukaishima Island not only sells amazing chocolate, but has a fantastic view over the beautiful Tachibana coast. It is only a short distance from the Shimanami Blue Line, but getting there involves quite a challenging climb that becomes manageable on an E-bike.

Oyamazumi Shrine, Omishima

This important shrine with some impressive ancient trees in its precincts is located in an area with restaurants and cafes. About 7km from the main Shimanami Kaido route, most recreational cyclists have to give it a miss, but your E-bike may mean that you don’t have to!

Mt. Kiro Lookout, Oshima

The view from the platform designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, on top of Mt Kiro on the island of Oshima, is arguably the classic Shimanami vista. Even on an E-bike the steep 3km climb can still feel like a workout, but we think you’ll agree that it’s worth it.

Sports E-bike Considerations

● Although Sports E-bikes give you a nice power boost, those not accustomed to sitting in the saddle for long periods may still experience some discomfort. Wearing padded shorts or bottoms is recommended.
